CHAPTER ELEVEN

Scarborough, North Yorkshire

Wednesday, 25 April, 8 a.m.

Marie peered over the duvet. The sun was shining. She looked at her watch, then sat up and found that she was looking at the sea. She watched it shimmering for a while. It looked inviting, although she knew it would be very cold. Then she reflected on the previous day and smiled.

After a few minutes she got out of bed and went to the bathroom. As she washed her hands and face, she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror and was slightly surprised to see that her hair was black.

She went into the little kitchen and put the kettle on.

She heard her mobile phone ring from the handbag on the bedside table.

She frowned. Hardly anyone had her phone number.

She rushed into the bedroom, opened her handbag, picked up the mobile. The caller was David Harlan. Then she remembered. In a weak moment she had given him the number last time they were together.

‘Yes, David,’ she said.

‘I want to see you. I’ve missed you. How about lunch? How are you? And where are you anyway?’

She was very pleased. It was great to hear a friendly voice. ‘I’m fine. Lunch would be lovely. Whereabouts were you thinking?’

‘Well . . . where are you?’

She hesitated. She felt safer when nobody knew where she was. ‘At the seaside,’ she said. But she knew he wouldn’t be satisfied with that. ‘Scarborough,’ she added.

‘Oh great. A day by the sea would be wonderful . . . blow away the cobwebs. Let’s see. I’m sure I can wangle a day away from the business. Can you meet me in the car park in front of the Grand Hotel in about two hours?’

Her eyes sparkled. ‘Look forward to seeing you,’ she said.

She ended her call and began to dance round the flat while humming or singing the few words she knew of the song ‘Shall We Dance’ from The King and I.

Then she rushed about tidying the flat and getting ready. She wanted to look nice for him. When the time came, she locked the flat and went down in the lift to the exit. She checked her car and moved it to a place where she could observe it from the window of her flat. Then with her face looking upwards to the sun, she walked lightly up to the Grand Hotel.

He arrived on time in an open-top sports car with a noisy exhaust.

He didn’t recognise her.

Eventually she raised an arm at him and smiled. David Harlan waved back and drove the thirty yards up to her.

She surveyed the car and grinned. ‘Very sporty.’

‘Are you up for it?’

‘Of course,’ she said with a smile.

He leaned over and opened the door. ‘Didn’t recognise you,’ he said. ‘I was looking for a blonde.’

She got in. He fastened her seat belt then squeezed her shoulders, leaned over and attempted to kiss her. At that same moment she had begun to change the uncomfortable position of the seat belt across her chest.
